Planning For The NAIS |
| |
The goal of the government program called the National Animal ID System, or the NAIS, is disease outbreak trace back. It will apply to all livestock, including equine, eventually. The USDA is focused on food animals, but the Plan, as currently written, will ultimately require that all individual animals classified as livestock be permanently identified.
The Equine Species Working Group (ESWG) is the committee representing the equine industry in the development of the national ID program. In published recommendations to the USDA, the committee states:
“Microchips are a cost effective, readily available equine identification method already in use in equines. Existing microchip technologies should be incorporated into the NAIS for equines.” (See entire text and all recommendations in the Info Library)
