Method of Identification

The ESWG recommends: “Whenever appropriate, equine identification systems currently in use should be incorporated into the national equine identification program. All equine identification technologies shall be immediately readable, modality neutral, computer compatible and be unique to and an integral part of the horse, including but not limited to:
  • Brands that identify a specific horse
  • Lip Tattoo
  • RFID (radio frequency identification devices or microchips)

The Equine Species Working Group (ESWG) has submitted 16 recommendations to the USDA regarding implementation of the national equine identification program.
Of note are the following points:

  1. Existing microchip technologies should be incorporated into the NAIS for equines.
  2. The ISO 134.2 kHz microchip should not be introduced until compatible ISO readers are available to meet demand. Click here for more information on Standards and Compatibility.

Please note: The AVID EquineChip operates at 125 kHz, not 134.2, and will therefore comply with the above recommendation. Additionally, the chip can be read abroad and complies with ISO standard 11785 Annex A.
