Microchip and Radio Frequency ID (RFID) technology is already used in a number of regulatory settings.

  • The USDA uses chips as ID confirmation in USDA-inspected dog breeding operations.
  • The State of Louisiana has successfully included microchips in its equine ID program for Coggins tests for over 10 years.
  • Microchipping is one of the accepted ID methods for the ‘Equine Passport’ program, recently implemented by the 14 southeastern states in the Southern Chapter of the U.S. Animal Health Association.
  • National Animal ID System (NAIS) pilot programs

“The most unique part of Louisiana’s program is that it requires permanent identification of all animals tested for EIA. ID can be by brand, tattoo, or electronic ID (microchip). Electronic ID or microchip, as it is popularly known, is the most popular form of ID. In Louisiana, the horse owning public has embraced this form of ID after some initial apprehension. There have been virtually no problems with placement, infections, rejections or reading of the microchips.”…

“This form of ID has worked very well in Louisiana’s program. Microchips provide positive permanent individual ID. They are easily placed, don’t cause problems, are readable for long periods of time and provide technological advantages.

ID of horses involved in Louisiana’s EIA program provides definitive ID of horses tested, reduces abuses to the program, reduces laboratory error, provides definitive ID of test positive horses for retesting, provides a test history for individual horses no matter the owner, and law enforcement agencies have used ID to solve theft cases.”
