National Animal ID System

The Equine Species Working Group (ESWG) has submitted 16 recommendations to the USDA regarding implementation of the national equine identification program.
Of note are the following points:

  1. Existing microchip technologies should be incorporated into the NAIS for equines.
  2. The ISO 134.2 kHz microchip should not be introduced until compatible ISO readers are available to meet demand. For more information, Click here to read about Standards and Compatibility.
  3. They have also recommended that a horse’s permanent ID be included on a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).
  4. The ESWG further recommends that at the time of veterinary inspection, any horse that has not been previously identified shall be identified with an official form of identification.

Microchips are the easiest and most convenient method of ID to comply with the ESWG recommendations.

As more and more states and practitioners become involved with both the NAIS and electronic CVIs, RFID systems will be needed.
